In the summer of 2021, the City of Copenhagen will host both UEFA EURO 2020 and Tour de France Grand Départ. Horten has advised the City of Copenhagen in this connection.

On 17 March 2020, UEFA announced that UEFA EURO 2020 will be postponed to the summer of 2021 due to the COVID-19 crisis. The announcement was made to the 12 European cities hosting the European Football Championship to mark its 60th anniversary.

The announcement kicked off an intense process of assessing the City of Copenhagen’s possibility of hosting the planned four matches during UEFA EURO 2020 in the summer of 2021, as the City had already planned to host the Grand Départ of Tour de France on 2 July 2021.

Initially, it was necessary to clarify various practical matters as there are only a few days between the last European Football Championship match at Telia Parken and the presentation of the Tour de France teams. Thereafter, an agreement had to be made on the allocation of rights in relation to visibility, the use of Copenhagen, etc.

Fortunately, on 7 May 2020, the City of Copenhagen could report ready for UEFA EURO 2020 in 2021.

Horten has advised the City of Copenhagen on the legal overlaps between the two mega sports events and has assisted with finding solutions and negotiating agreements with UEFA, DBU and A.S.O.

Tour de France will start in Denmark in 2021
