In December 2017 and for the next two years, Arena Fyn in Odense will host the finals of the world’s largest e-sports tournament - ESL Pro League - in the computer game Counter Strike. Horten has assisted Odense municipality in connection with the legal framework of the tournament.

The ESL Pro League finals will be Denmark’s first large e-sports event. Hosting the tournament, Odense will rank along major cities such as Dallas, São Paolo and London. The finals will take place from 8-10 December 2017 with the participation of the world’s 12 best Counter Strike teams. Thousands of visitors are expected, and the total prize is USD 1 million. ESL is the world’s largest e-sports organisation and is primarily owned by the Swedish Modern Times Group and German Turtle Entertainment GmbH.

Odense municipality will provide a sponsorship of DKK 2.4 million each year for the event. Horten has advised Odense municipality on the legal matters, including authority and structuring of the cooperation between the parties involved and the drafting of contracts.

Our advice has been based on our expertise on how to ensure a solid legal framework when public authorities and private players plan events. Previously, we assisted a consortium of five municipalities and the Ministry of Business in connection with the Danish offer to host Tour de France and Odense municipality's involvement in the Tinderbox Festival.

If you have any questions concerning municipalities’ support to sports and culture, you are welcome to contact us for more information on our compliance check.
