Are you a hedgehog or a fox?

Horten today hosted a workshop for a select group of Danish and European GCs, CLOs and Chief Legal Counsels on the role of the top legal officer. The workshop was by invitation of Global Leaders in Law

In today’s complex business climate, uncertain because of the Trump election, Brexit and increasing cyber and political risk around the world, an adept GC needs to demonstrate finely honed skills; the GC needs to be adviser, confessor, diplomat, leader, manager - and a lawyer. How can we best strike the right balance and make the most telling contribution to the business?

The discussion introduced the Hedgehog Concept and was led by two distinguished practitioners:

Mark Horncastle, General Counsel for GE Capital International, a leading global provider of specialist finance. Mark was previously General Counsel for GE Capital’s Real Estate and private equity businesses and also Executive Counsel for GE Capital’s Mergers and Acquisitions team.

Christopher Saul, the Senior Partner (Chairman and Managing Partner) of Slaughter and May from 2008 until 2016 and adviser to clients such as AkzoNobel, AngloGoldAshanti, Barclays, Cemex, Deutsche Bank, First Reserve, General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Huntsman, Morgan Stanley, Mothercare, Schroders and Unilever. Chris has now established an advisory consultancy focused on problem solving, governance and the mediation. He holds positions with various regulatory, cultural and charitable bodies in the United Kingdom.
