Ekokem is owned by the Finnish state, municipalities and companies. Ekokem's strategy focuses on development of circular economy in the Nordic countries. The Ekokem group became known to the world one year ago when the company was assigned to destruct the chemical weapons that an international alliance got out of Syria. In addition to the Finnish company, Ekokem also owns the Swedish waste disposal company Sakab AB.
One year ago, a part of NORD was owned by the Danish municipalities and known under the name Kommunekemi A/S. Several other companies have been acquired. In 2013, NORD's net sales amounted to EUR 50 million (approx. DKK 372 million), and the company employs 200 persons. Today, NORD owns six plants in Denmark.
Following this acquisition, Ekokem's net sales will amount to EUR 250 million (approx. DKK 1.9 billion), and its total number of personnel will grow to approx. 670. With the acquisition of NORD, the Ekokem group is one of the largest players when it comes to disposal of hazardous waste in the Nordic countries.
